I'm not American but I suspect you would need an account with Verizon to make it work. Technically speaking, there's no reason why it wouldn't work.

The phone will need to be a CDMA network phone to work (Verizon is a CDMA network). So it will depend on what company you were using it on before. If that company used a CDMA or a GSM network.
