Dont know enough about SD card

I have an HTC desire phone. Will it matter if I have an SD card in my phone @ all, other than if I would need more storage?
My friend was keeping her "stuff" contacts, pictures, Google & gmail accounts in my phone via her SD card! She took it out but it doesn't seem 2 have bothered any of my stuff!

The only way you need an SD card is if the phone won't work without one in it (which would be quite unusual) or if you need to have more space for certain types of files. Otherwise you should be fine without one.
