Dslr lens broken?

Hello,
Currnetly i have the rebel xsi. When I look through my lens, all i see is black
is it broken?

Did you take the lens cap off?
Also, is the mirror down?
If the camera is in live view mode (meaning that you can see the scene on the LCD)
take it out of live view mode so that the mirror will drop down.
