The TV has a shared component - composite video input so connect the component video (3 RCA) + audio (2 RCA) from the DVD to the TV. Set the input for component video in the TV menu. You could use the composite video but the picture won't be as good.
As for the TV recognizing the DVD it doesn't apply to a non HDMI input since there is no communication between the devices through analog video and audio.
