Dvi to hdmi set up, will a set of speakers hooked up to the laptop work for audio?

I have a tv with dvi, and a laptop with hdmi. I want to hook it up that way, but there is no sound. Will I be able to hook up a set of stereos to my laptop's audio port, or will that not work? So the audio will play through a seperate set of speakers hooked up directly to my laptop, no audio playing throught he tv.
