ethernet connection problems with a 5040 ....

what a nightmare trying to get this up and running ....1st the blaster took
so long to get going {but I finally tackled that problem !}now...the
ethernet connection works for several minutes.....then I get a frozen
picture and a slowly blinking ethernet light {on the rear of RTV}.
I have a long run of cat 5E {100'}going from one of the 4 ports from a
linksys wireless router {where my main pc is}and going to the replay TV's
ethernet port. I've tried the other ports on the router but it's the same
thing.
what would make it do this ?,not sure what to do with this since I don't
have a phone line in the room with the RTV.

HELP !!

thanks,

Doing network streaming at that time? Does the Replay work locally
(not network)? That could be the same problem I had (although mine
worked 2-3 days at a time).

Better to use the ethernet connection anyway. It's more versatile.

The LED doesn't go on and off except to indicate IP communication.
Looks likes it's trying to reestablish a connection that was
interrupted.

Possibly what happened was that the Replay (or the other one it's
streaming from has changed it's IP address). Are you using DHCP (set
replay to "automatic")? It can help if you can increase the DHCP lease
time (a setting on the router). I have a Linksys router and that
option is on the "DHCP" tab and is called "client lease time".

There is a more complex (and better solution) to use "static DHCP".
There have been a lot of posts about that recently (some of them are
from me). The solution (freeware program) I used has been working. I
got it 13 days ago and have had no Replay problems since then.

I don't know ... I think 100 feet is well within the specs for a LAN
cable but again am not sure... This is one of those things where I'd
darn need need to be there to get any ideas.

One possibility..... If you can find an inexpensive SWITCH (lan Switch,
this is kind of like a router but different) you might try putting it at
the fifty foot point.

I have a very short cable (less than 10 feet) between my Replay and
router since they are close to each other... But a fifty foot line to
this laptop off the router (another thing you might try.... Move one or
the other of the devices) works great (Short drop to main and linux
computers as well,,,, Very short Those are also near the router and replay

I do note that //main can download the replay many times faster than the
laptop can but I attribute that to the 366Mhz speed of the laptop not
the length of the lan cable (//main is 1.8 GHz)

I think the limit for a single cable is 100 meters (that's about 375
feet).

I think the DHCP bug is a more likely cause of this problem.

The laptops I've used have always been slower than desktops,
regardless of CPU speed. Maybe the Desktops have had better caches.

Also, I've been setting the Replay > DVA speed to 1200. It works fine
unless you're trying to use the Replay locally at the same time (very
long control latency, occaisional stuttering in local playback, & the
Replay sometimes reboots itself),

it seems to be working somewhat better for some reason ?, not sure why
though,I reset the modem, router, access point and switch and all seems to be
OK for the time being !

If it's the DHCP bug, it usually will work OK for a while (the time
varies from a few minutes to several days) then lose ethernet
connectivity until you reboot.

Well... As I type this I'm downloading some shows from the replay and my
CPU is bust only about 1/2 of the time (bit more when I type)

The slow down is the hard drive, Laptop HD's are not as fast as the big
boys... I could likely kick it up a bit since I'm using an external HD
most of of time and it's a "Big boy"

The drive is slower so as to reduce battery load by the way

So I do know the real reason.... But I think DVA likes to leave a bit
of processor to spare too. I know when I run an internet speed test the
laptop is .9x the mini-tower for speed. but the difference when d/ling
the RTV is greater

DVA could be less efficient at using ethernet (Java problem maybe?).

Did you check that your firewall is passing class D addresses
(particularly 239.255.255.250)? That can cause a significant slowdown.

WELL :,
I'm back to having problems again.....
it seems whenever I try to log onto the net,I won't be able to do so unless
I reboot both dsl modem and router, then boot up pc.
does the replay and computers use the same IP address ?,cause I believe they
are the same at the moment,
I use a linksys" wrt55ag" router,linksys "wap54 g" access point and a
linksys "ezxs55w" switch{near the access point and same room as the replay}

and sorry about posting this same ? in both of my threads.

They MUST be different (imagine trying to phone someone who has the
same number as yours). Are your devices (computer and Replay) using
DHCP? Then this shouldn't happen.

Or, are you confusing the device's IP with DNS addresses? THOSE are
the same (values provided by your ISP). It would help to post what IP
addresses you have,

In my case:

computer:
IP: 192.168.1.13
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS1: 68.1.208.30
DNS2: 68.1.208.25

Replay:
IP: 192.168.1.20
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS1: 68.1.208.30
DNS2: 68.1.208.25

notes:

Local IP address must be different for each device. Other numbers here
will be the same. Linksys routers DHCP gives out IP adddresses in this
range.

Your subnet mask will probably be this too.

The gateway address is the local (LAN) address of your router,

The DNS addresses are assigned by your ISP.

I have not specifically added that address to "Trusted" however I do not
see it being blocked and I"ve checked to see if that is happening

I have seen faster transfer speeds with the laptop since I started
transferring to an external full size HD (Regular "internal" type HD,
western digital to be exact, in an ADCOM Data "shell")

Your firewall may already include class D addresses in "trusted", but
it not it would be a good idea to do so. These are not internet
addresses, but used on the local network only.

my desktop uses 192,168.2.102
my laptop uses 192.168.2.101
my replay uses 192.168.2.100,

I guess I was mistaken with them having the same ip address.
but I just tried to fire up my desktop and could not go online without
resetting both modem and router {in that order} ??

do I need to change anything in the routers settings where I wouldn't have
to keep unplugging the modem and router ?

thanks,

It this all internet access, or just the web? Does the problem still
occur if you use an IP address (like 204.1.226.230) but not with a URL
(like www.grc.com). I had that problem (works with IP but not URL)
once. It was DNS.

Your computers (and Replay) are probably using DHCP (automatic IP
assignment). Are they? The problem may be related to DHCP lease time.
Try increasing it. That should make it work longer. The setting is a
part of your DHCP server (unually that'll be in the router).
