External processing for Laptop

Would it be possible to route the processing power (and all other functions) through a desktop? I would like having an old Dell XPS M170 but have it connected to a seperate tower with modern appointments and have it routed back to the laptop. Or is there a simpler solution? Sorry if this has been covered. I've looked and haven't found a distinct answer
