[citation][nom]necronic[/nom]Man, I guess there are only a few of us on here who would actually like to some some policing of the internet. There are some REALLY bad things that the internet, by nature, supports. And I would REALLY like to see them stopped. This goes from cp to open-circuit webcam/security cam hacking to identity thieves to support of terrorist agencies. Also, stop with all the analogies to the real world when describing whats going on here. The internet is a wholly different beast, so those analogies aren't real. People here seem so interested in acknowledging that when talking about piracy, but in privacy? No, that's totally different...Its not like this kind of data snooping isn't already done. Your grocery store tracks all of your purchases through their "discount card" to improve their logistics. Every website out there records massive amounts of user data for the exact same purpose. Anyone who has run a website could tell you that the amount of data you get from visitors is STAGGERING.The only difference is that this is "the man" and everyone immediately assumes he is out to get you, or that any increase in security is a slippery slope to a "prison planet". Of course, whenever someone does get nailed by an id thief their attitude imediately changes and they want to know why no one has done anything to stop this...And remember, this is NON-CONTENT data. No emails, passwords, etc.. But when the FBI does find a CP or IDTheft ring, they would have the ability to really nail the sons of sodom that are using it.[/citation]
The internet doesn't need to be policed though, its the PEOPLE who create the websites that need to be policed.
Restricting the whole for the sake of a few is a common practice now.
Gun control laws get stricter, because of gang fear and terrorism, yet the large majority of people who would buy guns aren't out to kill anybody, but suddenly its much hard for them to get their own protection.
Going through the security at the airport stops just short of bare skin parade through the metal detector, all to stop the few who would cause us harm.
Now if you give over your privacy of the internet don't you think its going to follow the same process? Might be records one year, the next government enforced software. Next time you get your taxes audited maybe they'll send a Federal IT guy to audit your PC while they are at it.
It might seem like I'm getting in over my head a bit with conspiracy theories, but when you think about it. A few years back at the airport we where just removing any large liquids from our bags...Now look where we are.
