Finding a Surface tablet?

The Windows 8 forum was down and I'm trying to find an answer for a co-worker of mine. He thinks he likes the surface tablet. But, he wants to at least be able to hands on with it before slapping a minimum of $500 down for one, understandably.

With Microsoft only selling them in Microsoft stores, is there any way or place you can get hands on with one in case the nearest Microsoft store is 8 hours away?

I'm not sure how you would find the schedule, but I work at a large state university that is 6 hrs away from the nearest Microsoft store and was able to mess with the Surface at a promotional booth in the university book store last week. I never made it back to see if it was that day only or if the booth was several days.
