Firefox saved bookmarks - how do I reinstate?

Hi all, I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 and had an extensive list of bookmarks. I had a windows start failure and when the system recovered, Firefox had lost all its bookmarks. I had already saved the bookmarks.JSON file to another location, but try as I might, no matter where I place this file, when Firefox opens they are not picked up, and a new bookmarks file is present after closedown.

I've tried changing the filename to the current date, also setting the PC date/time back to the day the saved file was created, all to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Within Firefox,

1. Hold down the following buttons in this order, Ctrl-Shift-B
2. New dialog box opens, choose "import and backup" button, near top.
3. Navigate to "Restore", then "Choose File...", at bottom.
4. Select your backup file.
