Question Fix or replace 17" HP i7-6500U laptop with fried motherboard?

Hello, I wonder if anybody here has any idea about the cost of replacing a motherboard in an HP laptop?

Two years ago I foolishly spent $1000 on an i7 laptop (even though I really don't need that kind of processing power) and now it's either fix it or buy a 15" i3 'not HP'.

I do like the big screen a lot and I'm bummed that I only got to use it for two years. So far I can't get much info from the HP service centres (it's Staples or Best Buy in Canada) except their 'diagnostic' is $60 or $100 respectively. I would really appreciate any tips! Thank you.

P.S. My dad and I think it's the motherboard because the laptop just died after a bzzt sound. And I unplugged it quickly because it got VERY hot.

You need to know the laptop model to find a motherboard for it. You can't just go by the size of the screen and the CPU in it.
