My wife's Toshiba Laptop Satellite c55t a5222
was working normally last night and today she has to press the Fn key to change the volume. It is acting like there is a Fn lock on or something. I can't seem to find any help on Google, so I figured I'd ask some experts. The Toshiba help page is extremely frustrating. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but my experience on this site has been very positive this far.

Thanks for the help in advance

Solution
Here is the solution I found on another website...

(0) Save all your open documents and stuff and close their respective programs

(1) Navigate to the following directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Toshiba\System Setting

(2) Double-click on the "System Settings.exe"

(3) Scroll down in the left menu until you find "keyboard"

(4) Click on the "keyboard" menu option and change the default "special function mode" to "normal f1-f12"

(5) Click the "apply" button and allow your computer to restart.

All done!!
Plzzzzz it is not working for me!
When I bought the laptop recently it the default was to use the special key without pressing fn, suddenly I needed to press fn in order to use the special keys.. I did go to "System Setting" changed it to "using standard f1.." and restart the computer then again went and changed it to "using Special keys" and restarted the computer again but still nothing changed!!!! I did that 3 or 4 times but nothing seems to happen!!!! Pleaaase Help!!
One more thing, Print Screen key should be used while pressing fn but it is not working at all!

did you try the wake up on keyboard to enabled before restarting,,, don't know why that mattered, but the second time we had to fix it that helped... Really annoying, wish I knew why it changed to begin with.

Good luck.

Tried but didn't work 🙁

http://pricklytech.wordpress.com/2014/08/05/surface-pro-3-quick-tip-alt-f4-does-not-work/

On the Surface pro 2 and 3 (and possibly the sp1 and other Win8 machines):

"... pressing and holding the Fn key and then pressing Caps toggles the functionality of the top row of keys on the Type cover so that you can use Alt + F4. This is a toggle though – once you can use Alt + F4 you have to toggle back to use the default (pictured) functionality of these keys."

Hello

I just solved the Function (Fn) key problem by accident!

Don´t go to your BIOS. Pres Cntr+FN and it´s function flips back to normal.

(where pressing F3 results in your screen brightening up, like your day, i hope)

Kind regards, hope this works for all.

To JDot: Many thanks to you! So glad I kept reading the thread. I had papers on the keyboard while watching a program and when I went to move the papers inadvertently pushed buttons, but had no idea which ones. I knew it had to have an easy fix. My laptop has a FN button, but not F1-F12, so most answers didn't apply. I love simple fixes.

I had exactly the same problem with Toshiba Satellite A200 - holding down Fn + F11 fixed it for me (F11 was the button below which the function icon was on with green light)

Im having the same problem but im using HP Pavilion 17 notebook. please help me

Very frustrating. Happened on my daughters laptop as well. However aso disable "r" and "y" which the IT had setup as function keys. Also CAPS lock light will not come in.

im useing a old dell inspiron 1501 and it was number lock didnt realize cause the keyboard dont have the numbers to the right i was just putting blue and blue together

Thank you very much nonenone it was ver frustrating problem , it has been solved your way , thanks a million

My son figured it out. If your keys are inverted, or something, really all you got to do is hold Function (Fn) Then press F11 and/or F12. Or Number lock/Screen Lock. I think its Number lock though. If you have one of those laptops that dont have keys F1-F12, Then try holding Fn for 10 seconds.

[strike]Your welcome![/strike]

how about mine? my letter "O" has 2 function keys (right arrow and number six). I need to use the number six because my key six isnt working, but when I press fn + O, the command is right arrow. how to switch this? please help..... 🙁
