freezing TiVo

I have a TiVo Series 2 that I bought in 9/03. Suddenly, the machine is
freezing up regularly---three times in the last three days. It doesn't
respond to the remote and I have to unplug/replug to get it going
again. A quick web search shows that the likely culprit is a bad hard
drive. What are my options for replacing the hard drive? I'm
perfectly comfortable taking apart and working on the maching myself if
I have good instructions.

Thanks,
-Lotofun

No, it's not hacked.

Do a search for the Hinsdale Guide, it will walk you through setting up a
replacement drive, a larger one if you so desire. Very clear and easy to
follow, but it does require a pc not running windows xp. Windows XP will
leave a signature on the drive that will make it unusable in a tivo.

I keep an old Pentium II box around with Windows 98 on it for just this
reason.

I am wondering if this still applies to directivos that have had the new
software update?

The software version doesn't change anything as far as just
swapping or adding drives.
