Hi,
is it possible to load a full detailed road map of California on a pocket
pc with a 128mb card? Which software is best to get for maps, at present I
am not using gps.
All input welcome

You need the whole California map? It might fit in 128mb, but I am not
really sure.

I use Pocket Streets. The cool thing about it is you can export just the
area you have visible on screen so you don't get to much you don't need.
There are also downloadable map online and the California ones there will
easily fit in 128.

Well my thought is that no matter where I am in the state, I would have a
readily available navigation tool. The very least would be SF Bay area 50
miles in any direction, seems more likely though to find a map of the whole
state?

I can't say 100 percent that the whole state would fit, but it should. Just
the Seattle area (from the water to Redmond) for me is only about 3MB, you
should be able to fit it.

One feature of Mapopolis is that you can load the major roads map for a
state and the individual detail maps of the areas you will be staying in. I
can guarantee you won't get this to work with Pocket Streets. You won't be
able to export the entire state, even if it would fit once you got it. You
can't even get all of LA in one export.

Mapopolis Major Roads for Cal is 424K BTW.

The map size is related to the information content... i.e. all of death
valley is going to be tiny compared to the same area that includes LA.

The approach that has worked best for me is to generate multiple "metro
maps" with descriptive names plus some "cross country" strips that cover
major routes such as costal roads. The metro maps will be small area
wise and the routes can be very large if metro areas are not included.

Even if it would not fit on a single card, SD cards have become cheap
enough to carry several and insert the state section that you need.

The problem isn't whether you can store the map on a card, the problem is
being able to load it into the PPC's working RAM for viewing. That's why the
maps available on the MS web site are kept to less than 5mb. I tried making
a map of the entire LA county area instead of having to have 5-6 individual
maps and it was so big that it was dog slow trying to move around it with
the nav buttons. I went back to using the individual maps for the speed.
