Gaming. New laptop vs old desktop.

Hey forum people,

I've moved abroad and bought a new laptop, but I'm still wondering if its as good as my older desktop at home. I'm interested in how these 2 would compare for gaming. I know the ATI 5770 is faster than the NVIDIA 650m, but the laptop has more/faster RAM and a much better CPU.

What do you think?

The laptop is:

MSI GE70 ONC.
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate,
Intel i7-3610QM Ivy Bridge,
8 GB DDR3 RAM,
NVIDIA 650m 2 GB GDDR5 RAM,
128GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD,
750 GB Hitachi HDD @ 7200 RPM

The desktop is:

Windows 7 64bit Ultimate,
Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3 Mobo F7g BIOS,
AMD Athlon 64 Athlon X3 445 CPU,
Sahhpire ATI HD 5770 512mb,
3 Gigs DDR2 800 RAM,
500 Gig Seagate HDD @ 7200rpm,

Just based on synthetics, I would say they would perform about the same.

Hmmm, I would tend to disagree. While I have, and still do, love the athlon II x4 6xx series of cpu's, I'm not totally convinced I would be happy with an x3 445, unless of course that fourth core was unlocked. I just can't say that a 3 core athlon ii will be able to deal with the heavy calculations required in games as well as I would personally like. That said, the 5770 is faster, certainly. But if you are gaming at 1440x900 or lower, I really can't see much of a difference between it and the 650m.


I would tend to think the laptop would be better, due to the substantial processing power upgrade.

Hmm, my bad... for whatever reason I thought you had a limited screen resolution (of a smaller screen) not full HD. Bah, stupid sleep depraved brain.

Then yes, you will see better results with the 5770. However, the superior processing power of the 3610QM is always nice for other things, and may even help close the gap some in game performance. The 650m is no slouch, for sure.

Ja, the 5770 has been a great card. I certainly miss my 27" HD screen at home! As far as the laptop goes, I tend to play on 1280x1024 and then use some AA.
