I have a Gateway NV53(a). I have had it sense new and its still like new. It currently has an Athlon II P320 CPU. I think this is the one of the slowest CPU's that was available for this computer. I am thinking about swapping the Athlon II P320 with a Phenom II N970. I know the N970 is 35W vs 25W for the P320 but the laptop could be bought with a N930 which is also 35W. Below is a link to the specs for this laptop. My question is do think the N970 will work? Or do I need the N930?

It is often not worth the hassle to replace a laptop processor, as to would it work, I am not able to tell you, though I would think that the board would prefer to have a processor it is meant to be running rather than one it is not.

There is a significant performance bump going to the N970. So I think it will be worth it. As long as the board plays nice with the N970. I have taken the laptop apart before its not to hard to get to the CPU.

I see that the link you posted has the specs of the gateway laptop. The N970 uses more power so less battery life . The N970 has more performance for multi threading but the same for one thread . Won't see much of a difference . The N970 is better than the N930 not by much. If you want to upgrade then awesome. But I wouldn't because I don't think I'd see better performance . I'd say sell the laptop for a decent amount of money and then buy a newer computer

Well I bought the N970 should be here by the end of the week. I realized the FSB will be 1333 if it works. That means I can upgrade the 1066 memory thats in it to 1333. I have the spares of the faster memory.

I will run Performance test before and after and post the results. This will let everyone know if upgrading laptops is worth it.

I also have a Dell E6520 with CPU that's upgraded-able. It currently has an I7-2620M going to go to an I7-2860QM if I get good results from the NV53(a).

Got the N970 CPU in and its purring like a kitten. I can definitely see the performance increase. Well worth it. So in my opinion its a smart move to upgrade CPU's in laptops than can be upgraded. Here is Performance test comparison. I did a run with the P320 then a run with the N970. As you can see the N970 improve performance across the board. Especially in the CPU and memory area. The only hardware difference in these runs is the CPU.

Here you can see the N970 even ran cooler than the P320 during the test.
