The upfront cost is something that scares a lot of people, but the savings over time from less electricity usage and replacement costs is a huge plus.

What's more, these bulbs actually come with a warranty.

This technology still has a long way to go before reaching the general consumer in terms of price per unit.

did u read the article? if used 4 hours a day it will last 17 years

avarage american has 0.15 home and stays in their own home 6.75 years in avarage. The rest who do not own homes ie rent will stay in their homes 3 years in avarage. the home owners who stay in their house renovate their houses every 8 years...

So there is no point keeping a lamp for 17 years... and there is no need to spend $40 on this lamp

Looks less strange than many CFLs. I hate incandescent bulbs. Just live in a place with lots of ceiling cans that have dimmers and get turned on and off a lot. You'll have a dead bulb or three every month, have to drag out the ladder, match the wattage, run to the hardware store every 2-3 months, etc. LED bulbs are the way to go. They already use them a lot in installations where power is more limited, like RVs. And when I left my last rental place, I took out all my CFLs and put in all the original incandescent bulbs that I had stored in a box in the crawl space. Not gonna leave $300 in bulbs for the next guy and buy them again.

Incandescent - bad
CFL - good
LED - better

Just wish they could up the wattage to 60W, 80W or even 100W equivalent. A 100W equivalent LED bulb would probably be under 20 W.

LED's still have many problems... a company was trying to get a contract from Vancouver City Hall to renovate a streets lights by replacing the Metal halide lights with LEDs...

But they failed because, cost wise, the Metal Halide is still a better solution over LED plus... Heat is another issue...

My fingers are crossed hoping for the next generation to over come these problems
