go to safety mode in p400 lenovo

I am using Lenovo P400 touch.with windows 8.1 update screen is going blank n black after giving the password.I have been surfing for the solution and experts say to go t safety mode.dont know how to go there. Any anyone pls help me.

1. Go to the Start Screen
2. Click on the power icon at the top right
3. Hold down shift and click restart.
4. Let go of shift when you see the boot screen.

Sorry to say but didnt understand when you say Go to start screen..The only thing I can do is power on ...no use even if I am pressing F8 or Shift F8.It then takes me to the password screen with my user.I see a power button icon .no use even if I hold it for a new while. So gave password and then it says welcome and then after sometime, a black screen with a mouse pointer appears..that's what is happening. Please help.

Thanks Sam for your interest and patience to help me out.But I am unable to see the options of power button.that's the problem.I see only the power button with shutdown option.even that seems not working. Please help

You can do the same thing with shut down. Just hold shift and click on it.
