There was a hard drive failure in my wife's HP Laptop (no backup disk was made). I bought a new hard drive:

HP 2000-2d80NR (F6S99UA) Hard Drive Replacement (7mm 500GB
Serial ATA-2.6 5400RPM HDD)

And replaced the old one. When I booted up the laptop, I got this error: "smart hard disj check has detected an imminent failure."

Did I do something wrong? If so, how can I correct this issue? Thanks for any help you can provide!

I didn't install anything yet. I just swapped the HD and booted the laptop. Is that the next step?

usher2016, did you buy the new hard drive from hp & how much did you pay for it?

when you referenced the hp number, I thought you bought the drive from them which meant you would have been burnt on the price of the drive. what windows was on that drive as in 7, 8\8.1 or 10??

I considered having best buy install the hard drive and add an OS for $140, but want to give it a shot myself first

I presume you are using a computer to post here, correct?

you have 3 options then & 2 of them will involve using your computer.
1: buy win 8.1 & install it yourself.
2: download off the net the iso version of the hp's win 8.1 that was installed on her laptop so you can use her product key numbers.
3: download the free win 10 iso from Microsoft.

Thank you for your help, I can't find her keys, so I will give the download a shot in the morning. I take it I would just put a disc/usb in the computer and boot it up to begin the installation?

the keys might be embedded in the bios so will be picked up by the new windows. I prefer using disk for os over usb.
