Have older DVD recorder and surround sound. How do I hook them up to cable box and had tv?

Without makes and models we can't give you a specific answer.
In general you would
connect the cable box to the TV with HDMI for viewing cable
connect the DVD recorder to the TV with AV cables for viewing DVDs
connect the surround sound to the TV audio output for sound
connect the cable box av or RF out to the DVD recorder to record from the cable box

I'm having the same issue with my toshiba dvd home theater system sd-kt50 it has no hdmi connection and I'm trynna hook it up with my direct tv hd cable box and my LG Flat screen . .

Run the appropriate cable from the 'audio out' of your tv to an input connection of your toshiba and all should be good.
