Recently built myself a PC and upon powering up all the ans spin and the light comes on but there's an issue with the BIOS. The monitor will briefly go to the BIOS startup screen and then after ~3 seconds go to a screen asking me to insert to boot media and press a key. The boot media is already inserted and pressing a key only generates another line of the same text. Pressing a key during the startup screen doesn't do anything. The keyboard functions for other computers so it is not that. Have I doe something colossally stupid?

usb or ps2 keyboard? did you read the motherboard manual on how to select a boot drive in the post screen?

USB keyboard

So I'm supposed to press F12 to take me to take me to the boot menu but this only takes me to a black screen with an unresponsive cursor.

try clearing the cmos to see if corrects keyboard issue. do you have or can borrow a ps2 keyboard to access the bios setup to enable usb legacy & allow you to press f12 to access boot menu?

I tried clearing the cmos but that didn't fix the issue. I don't have a PS2 keyboard on me but if you think that would work I can see about getting one.

try it & see. just need a borrowed keyboard so don't buy 1 as maybe a motherboard issue.
