hdmi connected to laptop but sound not connected

Connected my laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable.
Picture perfect but there is no sound.
I've gone to the Control Panel and looked at Sound and it says that the output is not plugged in even though the picture is.

your HDMI version of laptop is not compatible with your tv one... i'd the same problem with my old pc,but with my new laptop its works fine...sorry to say you cant resolve this problem... i'd tried every thing but no gain.. i just share my experience

Would he not be able to connect the sound out to the TV separately?

no i was talking about sound through HDMI.. using other sound cable you can get sound

So he can resolve the problem by using a separate cable.

I had this problem and when I looked at under sound before i attached the HDMI cable it shows my realtec sound card as the default sound device. Then I plugged the HDMI cable to the TV and because HDMI sound and video are both sent to the tv through the HDMI cable. Whn I plugged the HDMI cable in the ATI (which is my graphics cards) icon apeared and said HDMI connection. I changed the defualt from the realtec to ATI and sound came out of the TV. I've done this on 3 laptops and all ahd the same result.
