HDMI port not working

I plug in the HDMI lead and there's absolutely no response. Do I have to download software for it to work correctly?

I plug it in to my TV and I get no picture or sound, and it's as if I haven't plugged anything in. Do you know if this is a common problem?

Did you select the correct hdmi port on the tv. Also is this coming from a laptop or what?

Defo selected the correct port on TV, and this is from a netbook
