Yesterday I bought this model because my HDTV (Toshiba 26HF84) has
an HDMI input.
The video quality is impressive, although I couldn't seem to resize
the screen: pressing [PIC SIZE] results in the message:
"Function disabled", and the screen has black bars top and bottom
on every DVD I've tried so far. They are at their maximum on
a "widescreen" version of _The Matrix_ - the viewable portion seems
to be only about half the screen size.
Anyway perhaps I should have done more homework, because
I just found the following comment on a discussion forum:
http/forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/2/94244.html
But really, the picture quality through the analog component video
output was so bad that ANY OF YOU would be at least a little peeved.
I contacted Toshiba and they said they've had a few complaints about
this particular model for a variety of reasons (HDMI was quirky,
DVD player wouldn’t play certain disks, and yes, bad video quality
via the analog outputs). They immediately offered to replace the unit
with a newer upgraded SD-5980. The rep said that the 5980 was
identical to the 5970, only that the hardware was "upgraded" to
address all pervious issues. I sent it off and can't wait till
I get the new one back (in probably 3 weeks).
Has anyone else tried the SD-5970... and found similar problems?
The store has a 30-day return policy and I'm wondering if I should
return it and wait for the SD-5980 or consider another model.
(The Samsung 841 seems to get a lot of unfavorable mention).
There was also mention that "true" 1080p upconversion DVD players
would be available later this year, although I'm not sure whether
my TV will handle it: the 26HF84 specs say:
HDMI INPUT: HDMI compliant (type A connector)
HDCP compliant
Suggested scan rates: 1080i , 480p, 480i, 720p
I couldn't see any difference in picture quality between any
of the HDMI settings.
The buttons on the 5970's remote are tiny and awkward to use,
and the placement is confusing. However, the TV's remote has
user-configurable buttons which I can presumably program to work
with the DVD player, although I haven't tried this yet.
Any help appreciated. Also please let me know if there's a better
n/g for these questions.

ps. I also viewed _Winged Migration_ -- the video quality is
awesome.
