I just bought a new laptop with a combined headphone and microphone jack. When I plug in my headphones, it totally ignores them and plays through speakers instead. My headset has separate microphone and headphone cables - if all I want to do is play audio through them and not use the mic, do I still need an adapter? This article: http://www.howtogeek.com/180395/how-to-connect-a-headset-to-a-laptop-tablet-or-smartphone-with-a-single-audio-jack/ seemed to state that I didn't need an adapter if I just wanted to use the headphone element.

Hi,

You are right that you don't need an adapter if you'll be using just the headphone part. Do try these steps.
- Connect your headphone into the port.
- Right click on the speaker icon and select Playback Devices.
- Once open look for Headphone right click on it and select Set Default.
- Click Apply and OK.
