So I’ve got a very good headset that the mic recently stopped working on and instead of coughing up money for a new pair I figure I could plug in an external mic and just use that. I had a cheap mic laying around that is brand new in the packaging so it should work but nobody can hear me talk, could the connection be different? Do I need a mic with a specific type of 3.5mm jack?

A standard 3.5 jack should do. Is it a headset as well or a simple standalone mic?
Was it delivered with a phone? Then you might need a splitter like:

Eventually you will have to set the new mic as default recording device in windows and tell the used application which mic you are using as well.

Which new mic is it?

Does it work while your old headset is not connected? Is your old one an USB headset?

It's just a standalone mic. It came with a headunit for my car. It's just a cheap generic one. I haven't tried it without my headset connected and no it's not a usb headset...well it is interchageable but im using the 3.5mm jack cable with it
