Help me identify this game

I remember playing an arcade game back when I was in the Army (circa
1991). It was a vertical shooter that featured old airplanes and
baloons. For the most part, I don't think these were actual aircraft.
They seemed to be Victorian style, Jules Verne fantasy of what
airplanes should look like. The game featured various firepower
power-ups, but otherwise I don't remember much about the gameplay.
Anyway, can anybody name that game? And is anybody aware of a home
port?

I'm thinking of either Raiden or Ghost Pilots. Raiden sounds more like
what you are talking about, but the thing about baloons is throwing me
off. If it is indeed Raiden, that game was ported to every system from
the Turbo Grafx clear up to the Playstation, aside from 3DO.

Wait, did this game have you time warping to different periods, and
shooting down various planes, zeppelins, etc? I remember(but not the
title) of such a game, that had boss planes to shoot down as well.

If the "power ups" were actually "time warps", then it would make sense
that the game you are thinking of is TIME PILOT, which has been ported
to several systems over the years.

Time Pilot came to mind, but I seriously doubted that a Time Pilot
cabinet would have been easy to find in an arcade in 1991, by that time
it would've been 8 or 9 years old.

I really want what it is you're smoking there, Dr Smith.

Time Pilot is NOT a vertical shooter, and was only offically ported to
ONE system back in the day (CV, but there are unoffical ports to
systems like the C64). It has recently been emulated as part of Konami
Antiques (PS1 for sure, and non-emulated on GBA).

Lastly, Time Pilot's only "power ups" were for points and not for
moving on to the next stage (which happened when you shot a larger
vehicle, itself appearing after you shoot certain number of enemies)

Seriously, could it hurt to do at least a tiny bit of research before
you spew this stuff out onto usenet? I don't doubt your enthusiasm for
classic gaming and the whole experience but even the smallest bit of
correct information would bring wonders to your reputation here.

As for the game the original poster is looking for, it's Sky Soldiers

While I admit the KLOV isn't the easiest page to search for a game you
only know the barest of details of, I was able to find this after ONE
SEARCH.

Whoops... I may have spoke too soon there, the game Dan is looking for
may actually be the closely related SNK/Romstar game Sky Adventure:

I reread Dan's description and noticed he made no mention of changing
time periods, nor a jet fighter as the main protagonist.

"The boardwalk" in El Cajon, one of the biggest arcades in San Diego
county has a Time Pilot game to this very day.

The Victorian-style airships make this game sound a lot like Steel Empire,
though that was a horizontal shooter and was only on Genesis. Perhaps you
played it on one of those Genesis-in-a-cab things I've seen out there.

If you changed "balloon" to "parachutes", this description sounds
exactly like 1942 or 1943. Just a thought...

I GUESS THAT TIME PILOT CARTRIDGE FOR MY ATARI 2600 THAT I HAVE
DOWNSTAIRS AND PLAY FROM TIME TO TIME IS JUST IN MY IMAGINATION.

THANKS FOR SETTING ME STRAIGHT.

This wasn't time pilot. It had boss planes, and was a vertical shooter.
Came out late 80s/early 90s. Probably late 80s.

Was it war based or was it futuristic? Aerofighters and Raiden were pretty
big at that time.

Here's a page of arcade shooters

You gotta chill. I agree that at one time Dr. Smith was a bonehead, but he
has mellowed. If it weren't for him this group would really be dead. Your
holier-than-thou attitude makes you look like a real weenie (especially
after the doc owned you on the atari 2600 call... who should be doing their
research?)
