Help with new camera

Ok brand new to this, I was given a D3400 as a gift, went out yesterday, to a nearby polo match took some amazing photos of players... came back viewed them , some incredible.
I was playing around last night with menu, it said do you want me to format, ( disk), I clicked “NO”..... ... next I hit button above menu, it says “ folder contains no images”!!!! OYE, did I just loose them all, 75 photos in total...?????

Cameras and the SD card are not for perm storage or random browsing.
Transfer those pics OFF the camera and card at the earliest opportunity.

For your current situation, try PhotoRec to see if you can retrieve them.
