Hey I'm looking into buying a laptop for collage, just wondering what's the different between an 3gen i5 and a 4th gen i5 ?

the 4th gen i5 will have slightly higher speed, better battery life, graphics and a lower heat output. Get that by all means.

The main advantage with a 4th gen i5 is the battery life. They are made so that laptops don't have to be charged often. This will make the laptop cooler and should make the laptop quieter as well. I would get it if you are doing general tasks for collage as it means less time near a power supply. The amount of battery saved will depend on the size of the laptop and the size of the battery.
