Hi Def Tivo: how to save shows elsewhere

I have the HDTV Tivo, and occasional would like to archive TV shows. Is
there any way to save shows in HDTV format, either using a DVD recorder or
any other method?

Nope.

It is possible to record the output from your TiVo as anamorphic 480i
(like the enhanced-for-16:9 widescreen DVDs), but it wouldn't be HD.

The HD DTivos can be hacked using the same method as for an SD Tivo.
At this point you can pull the .ty stream over your network and store
them on a hard drive. From there it's up to you what you do with them.

Are there any reputable services that will install the mods on an HDTivo for
a fee?

I have an HDTivo in one room that does most of the recording. I have a
Series 2 with HMO in another room. I'd like to be able to watch SD programs
recorded on the HDTivo on the Series 2 and vice versa. It would also be nice
if I could play mp3 files on my HDTivo setup.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any reputable ones. The rights to the
mods are owned by their writers (mainly folks at dealdatabase) and
modding something and selling it would constitute selling their
software. While the people on DDB can be cranky it IS their software,
and they let you have it for free - they just don't want other people
to profit from it.

Which is fair, in my opinion.

I would suggest waiting until your warranty is up, and then hacking it
yourself. Search for killhdinitrd on DDB - it's the starting point.

Bear in mind I'm not completely sure the hack works the same way as
with a non-RID HDVR2 (which is what I have.) My upgrade was trivial,
but the HD path might be trickier. But I do know they've done it.

If you can get 4.01b on the HD unit you will be able to do what you
want to.
