Why when i select a contact does it highlight in blue the work telephone
number of my contact?

I didn't really wanted any particular piece of info highlighted.

Thanks

It isn't highlighted - it is hyperlinked. If you have a phone device,
tapping on that number will cause it to be dialed. Tapping on an email
address opens a new message with that address in it.

even though the highlighting is box highlighting and not the blue underline
and text like in this email?

Think you might be referring to the list highlight at the far right of
the line.

If you tap that letter, you will get a full list of telephone numbers
that are stored in the contact entry.

If you tap one of the numbers, that number will be marked as the
"display number" i.e. pull down a contact that has home, work, fax and
mobile number. Assuming that "w" is showing before the pulldown, tap
"mobile" and on any subsequent displays, the "mobile" number will be the
one that shows.

Not sure that is what i meant.

What I am mean is when i click a contact to bring up all its details it
highlights (on the only one i have entered) the work phone number with a
blue box over it.Even if I change the w or m on the screen previous to this
the work number remains highlighted. I can't understand why it is picking
out this detail. It has been suggested that it highlights this so that if i
click it it dials it but when i try doing this it does nothing. And if it is
so that it dials it then why particularly pick out the work phone number
rather than the home number.

I have since found that it highlights whatever is on the first line -
whether it is a phone number address etc.

So why does it highlight it and have I set some option for this?

That is called "select on entry" and happens in the "edit" rather than
the view screen... probably poor programming in this case.

It's there on the (incorrect) assumption that you will be replacing it
with a new value... i.e. if you were to tap <space> on the keyboard, the
highlighted field would be replaced with a <space>
