I have successfully set up my Convergence using the multi grid
pattern. The problem is that the whole picture is aligned too much to
the right side of the screen. When I run a Video test pattern, the
right side of the picture is cut off about 1-2 inches. Since I was
able to get access to the multiple convergence settings using the
remote control, is there any way to adjust the horizontal placement
without opening the unit? If not, do I need a manual to perform the
adjustment or can one of you technocrats write me through it?

Ron,

I had a 43FDX that has moved down to the basement. Here are some things I
gleamed from a Sears Convergence Pocket guide before doing the convergence
you need to do a phase adjustment. Also over in the archives at the
AVSforum there are additional service manual settings.

DCU PHASE ADJUST
Normal (Progressive) Mode
1. Input an NTSC signal via tuner, composite video,
or S-video.
2. Enter DCAM Mode
3. Press HELP button on remote. (Green crosshatch
is displayed)
4. Press EXIT button on remote. (Character pattern is
displayed, which is the DCU Phase setting mode)
5. Set PH-H phase data as shown below by using the
4 and 6 button on the remote.
6. Set PH-V phase data as shown below by using the
2 and 5 button on the remote.
(continued)
7. Set CR-H phase data as shown below by using the
' and ( button on the remote.
8. Set CR-V phase data as shown below by using the
" and ! button on the remote.
9. Press HELP button on remote to exit from PHASE
ADJUST Mode.
10. Press PIP MODE button on remote twice to write
the new Phase data to memory.
11. When Green dots appear, press MUTE button on
remote to return to DCU adjustment mode.
12. Repeat for 1080i signal

Here are the values:

PHASE MODE - Normal
PH-H: BB
PH-V: 0C
CR-H: 4C
CR-V: 00

PHASE MODE - 1080i
PH-H: BB
PH-V: 07
CR-H: 4C
CR-V: 0C

Now it says in the manual to do this before doing a convergence.... You can
verify in Service Mode

If your sympatico email addy is correct I sent you the pdf that I got this
information from....

Thanks for the info Gomer, after I do this will I still have to find
out how to adjust my Horizontal Picture Position?

After reading the Service Guide, I beleive that I should obtain the
Overlay. Any idea on the cost of an overlay or if one can be "Home
Made"?

The Hitachi Service Manual gives the dimensions and Graticule measurements
required to design your own overlay, or the item may be ordered via Hitachi
thru an authorized servicer. Required part number is also in the service
manual. If you deal with Andrews Electronics in California they may be able
to give you the part number and order it if you have an open account.

NO! The phase adjustment is not for positioning the pix. It adjusts the
area affected by the adjustments to coincide with the crosshatch. It is one
step in a complete alignment procedure. Centering and sizing the pix is
also done early in the alignment. There is no way to move or resize the pix
that does not affect convergence. Get the convergence manual and follow the
entire procedure if you want to adjust the set properly. It is not that
hard but the documentation is essential.

What I did notice was that this "moves" the whole convergence grid, and you
will need to check the geometry and redo the covergence. Compare your
current values to the ones I posted. I would curious to see if the H value
are way off .... I am no expert on this but I wonder if overscan also is
playing into it?
