Hitachi Roku TV - Can Roku Be Replaced?

Hitachi Model LE50A6R9 - Has an older Roku. Can it be replaced with one of the newer models?

You can't really "replace" it but you can use an external Roku instead on the internal one.

This one appears to be external. There is a metal cover secured by a screw over HDMI port 3. I understand the remote that came with the TV will not operate a new Roku. I am hoping there is not so much programming built into the TV itself to prevent port 3 from recognizing a new device.
