How these units are connected? Does your turntable has RIAA preamp?

You can't hook the TT to the EQ directly. Connect the TT to the phono input on the MA-230.
Connect the EQ in the tape monitor loop (record out to EQ in, EQ out to play). When you want the EQ just engage the tape monitor. This way it will work on any source not just phono.
