How can I connect my X-box one to my sony bd-vt 79 dvd player?

So I think I've tried just about everything and it seems pretty straight forward. I have the hdmi out from the dvd player hooked up to my tv hdmi one and I have my xbox one hooked in to the hdmi one on the dvd player. Ive selected hdmi one on the dvd player but nothing appears on the tv.
