How can I improve an old home theater system?

I have an older home theater system with a Sony SXRD VPL-VW100 projector, an HK AVR7000 receiver, and a 100" screen.

Good picture, but no longer compares to quality of picture with a (much cheaper) Samsung 6300 4K HD TV.

Any suggestions re an economical way to upgrade picture quality?

Local AV shop recommended substitute projector for an 85" Samsung TV.

I agree.

You folks are always attracted by the latest, the shiniest. Me, am waiting patiently for more 4k contents. Heck just until recently am aware I can't do without HD, a full 5 years after I went full HD, at that time I felt my best DVD rivals HD and was satisfied.
