how can i split video to tv, and sound to speakers

I pluged the HDMI lead into the laptop from tv and audio lead to speakers through mixing desk. Everything went to TV but no sound through speakers.I was told to get a VGA convertor I did but it does not have a HDMI plug or lead. how do I get this to work for karaoke

You just need to select speaker as default audio output in sound options mate.
With HDMI plugged in it will default to HDMI normally - you just have to manually change it.
