How do I hook up an older Yamaha receiver to Vizio smart TV

Solution
If the receiver has an optical audio input you may need to turn the optical audio output on in the TV menu and set it to output in surround sound. Check the owners manual.
On the receiver you usually have to assign the connection (optical 2 for example) to an input (video 1 for example).
Set the surround mode to Dolby.
If the receiver doesn't have an optical input you will need an optical to analog converter like this one

Maybe you can hook it up via an optical cable, or like jsmithepa said, using analogue RCA. But if your TV is fairly new, you may want to invest in a newer affordable A/V system with HDMI and ARC compatibility. But without knowing the models of what you have, it is difficult to know exactly how you could make the best connection with what you have - if at all.
