Solved! how do I know if a keyboard fault is software or hardware related?

I have an HP Pavilion DV6000 and find that sections of the keyboard don't work. In particular, these are the two ends of the top row of letters, so I don't have QWER UIOP. I have deleted and reloaded the keyboard elements from Device Manager, yet the problem persists. Is this pointing to a keyboard replacement as I suspect?

What would you use to clean it? I shouldn't have to take the keyboard out of the laptop should I?

A small brush. Or a vacuum with a brush extension nozzle should do. Or tip it upside down. Shake it a bit
