I assume you are using a desktop PC.

You may have a power saving profile activated, you can change this by;

Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

from here you can adjust various settings related to power consumption.

does the actual operating system run a shut down sequence? Or poof your computer loses power?

just goto run & type "shutdown -a"
