How long will £1,000 laptop be able to game at High for?

I looked it up and it can run most games on High while going up to Ultra on the less graphic games like FIFA and dropping to Medium on the more intense ones like Splinter Cell but with these specs how long will it do that for:

i7-4700MQ
765M Graphics
8GB RAM
1TB HDD 7,200RPM
17.3" 1080p display

Do you mean how long will it last in terms of wearing out (life of the components)? Or how long as in how many years will it be able to run games really well that are "new"?

Just how long it will be before I have to turn down the settings on most new games to Medium.

As a sidenote, I know for a fact that you can get better laptops than that for £1000.This is much better: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/VortexIV-15/
Choose the i5 processor and 8gb ram. Or if you want a 17 inch model look at the other custom laptops on the site. I've found that they are by far the best bang for back custom laptop manufacturers.

I'd prefer the bigger screen and if that just means cutting back to an i5 then am all for it!

The GTX 765m is more or less somewhere in the range between the nVidia GT 650 and the Radeon HD 7770. So I think you can look at benchmarks for those graphic cards to get a general idea. Note that desktop benchmarks will likely be based on either a stock speed or overclocked Core i5-4670k / i7-4770k CPUs.

Intel Core i7-4700MQ

Mate, the i7 is overkill unless you Will be doing a lot of photo/video editing.

Overkill now, perhaps but in the future not so much. In the near future games will get developed more and more to take advantage of those 4 cores.

Games rely more on the dedicated GPU for rendering. Some games are more CPU intensive, granted. I wouldn't call the i7 overkill when it comes to modern demanding games, but the focus really should be more on the GPU, as that may or may not be upgradeable in the future. With the CPU, you could at least go i5 for now and later upgrade to an i7; possibly even an extreme edition down the road.

To answer your initial question: With a 765M - or even a 770M - you should be able to play games on high - ultra settings for another couple of years. 2014 is bound to put the 765M to work, while the 770M should be able to keep up a bit better. Most likely sometime next year you'll be required to turn things down to medium high - high with the 765M to maintain good FPS, while the 770M may be able to run things at high - ultra at slightly better FPS.
