Please help! I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to connect our old Techwood PLR85 receiver to our new Insignia flat screen TV and cable box/DVR.

Manual with a view of the back of the receiver is here:
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/654206/Techwood-Plr-85.html?page=5#manual

The TV's specs are here:
https://www.insigniaproducts.com/pdp/NS-43D420NA18/5886208

So obviously I'm a novice at this stuff, so go easy on me. From what I understand the cable box needs to connect A/V into the receiver then from the receiver A/V into the TV. Right?

I've tried connecting an RCA cable from cable box into the Video 1 input of the receiver, and then another RCA cable from the receiver's Video 1 output into the RCA input on the TV. Seems straight forward, no? Well, I get nada.

Now the way I have it connected for now gives me video through the receiver, but I only have audio from the TV's speakers. I have the RCA cable from cable box into the front of the receiver, which is the video 2 input, and then I have an RCA cable from the receiver's video 1 output into the TV.

What am I doing wrong??

Thank you for the links.
All your video sources (cable box, etc) connect directly to the TV. Use HDMI if you can.
Your TV has an headphone analog audio output jack.
Connect that to any audio input on the receiver except phono.
See page 30 & 40 of the TV manual for more info.
I suggest you set the TV output to fixed. That way you won't overload the input of the receiver and create some nasty distortion. Use the receiver to adjust the volume.

It halfway worked! Hah.

The HDMI for video works great, but connecting from RCA output on tv to RCA input on receiver does nothing. I tried every single input & output on the receiver (while making sure to change the corresponding output selection on the front of the receiver) and no sound whatsoever.

I swear the speakers work, but any other ideas on how to connect it? There is an audio output on cable box, but it's optic and the receiver definitely doesnt have that.

May be you have to enable that analogue audio output on your TV. Check the manual how to do it.

You can check whether you've chosen correct receiver input by unplugging the cable from the TV, and touching the center pin of the RCA cable - you will hear humming from the speakers.

Thank you for trying to help. My apologies for the delayed response. I'm super frustrated with this.

The HDMI works, but audio still doesn't. I connected an RCA cable to a headphone jack adapter (link below) so one end is in the TV's headphone analog audio output jack and the other end I've tried connecting to the reciever's inputs for CD and DVD, reset the whole system, and still no sound through the receiver. I've messed around with the TV's analog output settings and tried the fixed output and variable. No change.

The only analogue audio output options are to use "Headphone/Audio Out Variable" and to make sure the Audio Format is set to PCM instead of "Pass through". Both of these settings are selected and still no go. And no matter what input I have the RCA cables plugged into on the receiver there is no humming. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
