Hi all,

I have a new high end Sony Vaio Windows 8 laptop with HDMI which is connected to HDTV which in turn is connected to Onkyo amplifier. I am able to get HD picture but no sound at all from the amplifier, or even if I turn the TV volume up. I've tried all the various amplifier input options (i.e. BD/DVD, VCR/DVR, CBL/SAT, GAME, AUX, TUNER, TV/CD and PORT). I've looked into Sound Playback options on the laptop- available options are AMD HDMI Output which has a green tick when connected to amplifier, and Realtek Speaker/HP. The sound monitor only shows sound coming from the Realtek which I do hear on the laptop, and not the AMD HDMI Output despite being highlighted. I am trying to play a Blu-ray and get surround sound through the amplifier using PowerDVD (note again that I'm getting no sound at all through the amplifier at the moment).

Can anyone please help?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Wolf,

'fraid that doesn't work. I do not even get a picture that way.

My entire set up before trying this is as follows:

HDTV only has 2 HDMI ports. Amplifier has several.

HDTV >>HDMI>> Amplifier
Amplifier >>HDMI>> Blu-ray Player
HDTV >>Phono>> Amplifier (for TV sound)

I've tried PC Laptop >>HDMI>> HDTV (I get picture no sound)
I've tried PC Laptop >>HDMI>> every single HDMI port on the back of the amplifier, this is in addition to HDTV >>HDMI>> Amplifier (no picture or sound)

Any other suggestions?

Hey Eboy,

With home theater systems, HDMI will only transport HD Video, to get audio you must have a connection via Audio Jacks( the red and white portion of AV input plugs) or a digitial optical audio fiber cord (similar to internet fiber cord). I had the same issue for my PS3 with home system. I am currently looking for a surround system friendly connection for my PC since I do not have digital audio connection.

Basically what I am getting at. You need a headphones-to-audio jacks cord to patch the laptop to surround sound. I have not found a way to retain the digital audio that will be translated into Dolby surround sound. Still looking, lurking until I find solution.

check your desktop settings. usually the issue i have is that my main is the pc (when duplicating) and so no sound through the hdmi just image. if the tv is set as default that should be fixed, and then open up your windows sounds and configure them to the tv. (surround sound i havent got working yet just sound)

This "HDTV >>HDMI>> Amplifier" is probably your issue. Run just the audio out to the amp using the optical out on the TV. Connect the laptop to the TV with HDMI.
