If you’re fortunate enough to own a high-end Android device, you may be able to take advantage of the new multi-window mode that came with Android Marshmallow. It needs a little tinkering to get it to work, but once you’re in, you will never use your device the same way again. So if you like the sound of multitasking, here’s how to enable multi-window mode in Android Marshmallow.
FYI, multi-window mode is apparently going to be enabled in Android N.
To enable multi-window mode in Android Marshmallow you will need Marshmallow installed and a root-enabled file manager on the device.
1. Hold down the power and volume down button to boot into recovery mode.
2. Select Mount/system once the menu appears.
3. Connect your device to your computer and open a CMD window (Windows OS).
4. Type or paste ‘adb pull/system/build.prop’.
5. Open the file using a text editor and locate the ‘ro.build.type’ line.
6. Find ‘user’ after the ‘=’ sign, change it to ‘userdebug’ and save.
7. Type or paste ‘adb push build.prop /system/’ in the CMD window.
8. Type of paste ‘adb shell’ to open a shell window.
9. Type or paste ‘cd system’.
10. Type or paste ‘chmod 644 build.prop’.
11. Reboot your device.
12. Navigate to Developer options, select Drawing and enable Multi-window.
You should now be able to view two windows at once and use split-screen mode!
When you open apps, you should see a new icon next to the X close in the top right. Tap the icon and you are asked to select a new task layout. Have a play and see what layout you prefer, it will come into effect when you have two or more apps open at once.
