How to hook up imac to hp monitor

Hello,
my imac needs a new display, so instead of spending $500 to get it fixed, I was told I could hook up my imac to an hp monitor I have. I purchased the correct cable from apple. Problem is - the hp monitor does not mirror my imac. It's like watching a made for widescreen movie on an old square tv and zoomed in to the center. Any suggestions??
