How to replace a laptop primary screen with an external monitor

I have a laptop (hp pavilion g7) where the monitor broke so I took it off so I don't have a way of seeing anything. Is there a way to force set an external monitor outside of Windows.

Found this on another website forum:

First connect the external monitor to the laptop --> Switch ON your monitor and then your laptop. If you failed to get the display on the external monitor, then use the proper combination keys (like Fn+F5/ the function key that has the monitor symbol on it) to toggle between your laptop screen and the external monitor.

Looking at images of the g7 I think it is actually Fn+F4.
