How to retrieve pictures from cell phone

HI, My son deleted my picturs from my cell.What should I do now?? what program is best to try and retrieve and is it safe.I don't know anything about this ,just barely got to write here by some small miracle.any help would be great

What kind of phone was it and do you know if they were on an sd card or anything.

They always say when you delete something it's not actually deleted but in my experience unless you are paying someone alot it's hard to really recover all the data you want on your own.
