How to Stay "Cool"

I know with gaming laptops that over heating is an issue when playing intensive games. Well obviously besides the internal fan in the laptop is there any other way to keep your laptop cool and to prevent it from overheating and crashing. A friend told me that there are these liquid gel pads or something of the sort but my friend said that its not a fan operated pad but (a for a lack of a better word a icy liquid pad) is this true and if it is where can I find one?
