hp Compaq nc2660 intermittent boot problem

My nc2660 has been doing this insanely annoying thing. When I power it on, first displays the hp flash screen which freezes and is very dim. The only way to shut it off is to either pull the power supply or long press the power button. So I'll try again. As soon as it boots you can see the screen is dimmly lit. Sometimes it'll take a few tries to boot. Sometimes it seems it will never boot. That dim screen has to be significant, I've seen splash screen freeze before never with a dull screen.

Hi, I will need a bit more information from you to be able to help. Can you post the complete product number and operating system your computer is running?

Is the screen always dim?
Have you checked your power adapter or tried a different compatible one?
Also have you tried a different electrical outlet, preferably a direct wall connection.
