I have been shopping around for a new headset (I play all kinds of games from CSGO to just cause to the Total war franchise) and had decided on the Kingston cloud headset when I started reading and hearing that headsets are overpriced and to get a headphone and microphone combo.
This drove me into another rut where all I did was research headphones and mics.
DECISION: I have decided on a Sony ECMCS3 Microphone as it seems to be the best value for money but I keep going back and forth on the headphones I have narrowed it down to :
*Audio Technica ath-m50x- which has great reviews but 1 in 10 say they are highly disappointing
* TAKSTAR HI 2050- which are alot cheaper and apparently have better soundstage
*Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO- which again has positive reviews but the fact that it is 80ohms means that I may need a amp
I realise that there are many more but I need help from what I have heard open headphones are better generally but I am not sure if the sound will be picked up on the mic.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.s I am upgrading from the creative fatality headset

I would have to say from the names you listed the Audio Technica or Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO are by far the go to ones.

anyway you can buy this one used for $119.00

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD595-Performance-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B0001FTVE0

pretty good deal

Best new one would be http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-558-Headphones/dp/B004FEEY9A

Don't exclude Sennheiser from Audio...ever ;)

I am curious however why you went with headphones and then a separate mic for gaming?

The reason why I ask is Sennheiser PC series make excellent gaming headsets.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Collapsible-Headset-Control-Microphone/dp/B0012XFDWO

a little over your budget but if you can save a little I would really recommend...

a little over your budget but if you can save a little I would really recommend rather getting the PC350's over a headphone set.

I own a Sennheiser RS220 (for music) and a PC360 (for gaming) and the PC360s are so good I only use them my RS220s gather dust, literally.

The PC360's architecture is very similar to the PC350 thus the quality will naturally be outstanding.

However if you really want a headphone , separate mic setup I think you are going in the right direction with the Audio Technica / Bayerdynamic. I would lean towards Beyer.

Well, you may try to look for some reviews of QPAD Series Headsets. I use QPAD QH-90 with closed cups and i really enjoy them. Nice bass and overall sound and no problems with the mic. They have open cup series also, so you may check the full list of them. And i have to agree with Christiaan here, if you want a high quality sound, go for Sennheiser, i've heard some good stuff about SENNHEISER PC-330 version.
